Sonia Ruiz
1984, Bella Vista – Tucumán
Sonia Ruiz (Bella Vista – Tucumán, 1984) is an Argentine visual artist whose practice centers primarily on painting. Her work is distinguished by a realism that serves the uncanny, where various characters inhabit scenes in which the erotic, the abject, the uncanny, the familiar, and the comic are intertwined. Through this blend, Ruiz constructs compelling narratives that delve into visceral, emotional, and self-reflective impulses. Her approach moves fluidly between the ambiguity of painting and illustration, and between a digital aesthetic and handcrafted execution—creating a visual universe shaped by tension, encounters, and contradictions.
She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the National University of Tucumán and has expanded her training through programs such as PAC (Contemporary Art Program) and the Artists Program at Torcuato Di Tella University. In 2024, she held two solo exhibitions, one at PIEDRAS and another at Sala Peluche. Her work has also been exhibited at institutions including the Casa Nacional del Bicentenario, the Centro Cultural Recoleta, and the MARCO Museum. Ruiz’s work has received recognition in the XI Itaú Visual Arts Award, the 110th National Salon, and the 50th Salon of Tucumán.
